Tribute for Gregory Gatumuta Karitu It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gregory Gatumuta Karitu on July 12, 2025. BIRTH The late Gregory Gatumuta Karitu was born on May 30, 1998 at Marie Stoppes Hospital Eastleigh, Nairobi, Kenya. He was the second born child of the late Jane Njeri Githaite and Charles Karitu Gatumuta, and a stepson to Peris Wawira. Gregory was a loving brother to Sharon Njoki and Victor Kimemia, and a loving stepbrother to Zainabu Wanjiru, Geoffrey Gatumuta and Ashley Njeri. CHILDHOOD. Gregory grew up at Gitaru, Kabete Sub County, Kiambu County just like other children of his age in a pre-urban setting. He would assist his parents in various chores when not in school. EDUCATION Gregory started his early education at Uthiru Genesis School in 2002 and later joined Rev. Musa Gitau Primary School in 2007. He sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E) in 2012. Gregory joined Highway School in Nyahururu for his Form 1 & 2, from 2013 to 2014. Between 2015 & 2016, he attended Father Abraham Secondary School, Naivasha where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.). After his secondary education, Gregory joined a College for a Certificate in Mandarin language. Gregory also completed a Certificate Course in Coffee Brewing (Barista) at Dormans College as well as a course as a Plant Operator at the Kenya Institute of Highways, Building, and Construction (KIHBT). CHRISTIAN LIFE. Gregory was born in a family of Catholic background but later joined Redeemed Gospel Church where he was dedicated. He later rejoined St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church where he used to attend 4th Mass and participated in youth activities. After relocating to Delaware U.S.A he became a member of Abundant Life Worship Ministries. WORK Gregory started hustling as a small-scale entrepreneur selling secondhand shoes. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator before getting a job in Qatar from 2022 to September 2024. LIFE IN AMERICA In 2023, Gregory applied for the U.S. Green Card and with Rev. Peter Nganga sponsoring to host him, Greg’s visa was approved. In October 2024, he relocated to America and began living with Rev. Nganga and his loving family, where he was welcomed as part of the family, until his untimely demise on 12th July 2025. While in America, Gregory worked as a cashier at ShopRite Supermarket, where he interacted with many people from the Kenyan community as they came to shop. After leaving ShopRite, Gregory worked as a delivery driver with Amazon Flex and as a food delivery driver with Door Dash. Gregory did his work with a lot of enthusiasm and he would call to joyfully share with us his new experiences. Additionally, Gregory also did an online course in Scrum Master, something he was only able to do late into the nights after long days of engagement. SOCIAL LIFE Gregory was a jovial and social person full of life. With his big smile and a pure heart, Gregory made many friends from all walks of life. He was very respectful and always concerned in how others are doing. Greg was always intentional in whatever he did and was full of ideas which he shared with friends. Wherever he settled, he easily interacted with his new community and made friends. HOBBIES Greg loved spending time with his friends, reading, jogging, going to the movies, playing lawn tennis and going to the beaches to listen to the soothing sound of sea waves. FINAL MOMENTS Gregory lived a healthy and active life with a lot of vigor throughout his life. On July 12, 2025 together with his friend, Sidney Bichanga, Gregory traveled to Rehoboth Beach, DE along the Atlantic Ocean for swimming. Tragically, Gregory was swept away by strong ocean currents and drowned. He died at the prime age of 27 years. Gregory has left behind his father and siblings and a host of extended family and friends. Gregory’s love and passion for life will forever remain in the many lives he touched. “We glorify and thank God for blessing us with Gregory for those 27 years, May our good Lord rest his soul in eternal peace, Amen.” Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service in celebration of Gregory’s life on Friday, July 25, 2025 from 4-7 PM at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702.
