Holcomb N. Hall

Holcomb Nathaniel Hall passed away peacefully on May 6th, 2016 at Regency Healthcare Nursing Home, Wilmington, DE. Holcomb was born in Lynchburg, VA on October 18, 1920 to the late Holcomb Hall and Christine Shepherdson. After graduating from Dunbar High School in Lynchburg Virginia, he took some courses at Tuskegee Institute of Alabama; from there he went to Washington DC, where he worked in the Pentagon Building as a cook. He was an excellent cook, famous for his “Manhattan clam chowder”; he eventually moved to New York, where he met and married his wife Vernitta Fishenden, and found work with the New York City Transit Authority, working full time as a Power Maintainer and attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he obtained his degree. After 30 years of service he retired from NYCTA in 1982. Holcomb was an avid reader; throughout his life he loved history and politics, reading history books and newspapers every day, and he loved discussing and debating history and politics. When debating Holcomb “you better have your facts right” because losing was never an option. He was also a civil rights activist, advocating for equal and voting rights in the 1960s, and 1970s. Mr. Hall was well known in the community of Brooklyn, NY, as the TV repair man, he had a passion for fixing electronics. Holcomb was predeceased by his wife, Vernitta; his daughters, Christine and Barbara; and son, Nathaniel. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Karen Mackey (Alonzo), Janice Givens (Stanley), Charlene Sylvester (George); 7 grandchildren: Phillip, Shanique, Tasha, Stanley Jr, Tynisa, Kip, and Nicole; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; and 1 sibling, Alice Green. Holcomb will truly be missed by his family because of his one of a kind personality. A visitation will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 11 AM -12 Noon at Strano & Feeley, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702 followed by a memorial service at 12 Noon. A special thank you to all those who took care of our dad at the Regency Nursing Home.
