Kefa Morendi Mong’are, of Newark, Delaware died after a short battle with cancer on May 20, 2024 (he made his 60 th birthday based on Kenyan time). The family is deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden death. Kefa was born on May 21 st , 1964 in Kenya. Kefa attended Tagabi Primary School in Kericho, Kisii Progressive in Kisii, Jersey City University, in New Jersey, and Wilmington University, in Delaware. Kefa lived in New Castle County, Delaware for over 30 years. Kefa was an accomplished and certified Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol professional who served hundreds of citizens in Delaware and other states. Helping people was Kefa’s pride, joy, and life’s work, and he poured his heart and soul into the career, which showed to all clients that he served. A true entrepreneur at heart, Kefa was a small business owner for many years, and is known by many for Equator Lounge, a bar and restaurant, in Newark, Delaware which served not only Diaspora Africans, but also, Americans who were looking for a quality place to socialize. In addition to his profession and business, Kefa was a member of Safari Golf Club of Delaware where he spent much of his free time playing golf and also served as the secretary. Until becoming ill, he enjoyed running and walking, and of course, cooking tasty meals for family and friends. He was also an avid reader, which made him a great writer and a person who was up to date with world affairs. Everyone who knew Kefa knew how special he was. Kefa was full of light and joy, he interacted with people, young and old easily, traits that were obvious to all after even just a single meeting with him. May Kefa Mong’are rest in eternal peace, free from pain, and may he be remembered for the love, hope and light he brought into the lives of others. Kefa is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his mom, Janifa; children: Christine (Kenya), Nadine, Cyrena, and Benjamin (Newark, Delaware); siblings: Dick, Charles, Erastus (Newark, Delaware) Sofia, Janet, and Josephat (Kenya); and an abundance of relatives and friends spread across the globe. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his strength will continue to inspire generations to come. A second visitation will take place on Friday, June 7 from 10-11 AM at Praise Assembly, 1421 South Baltimore Pike, Newark, DE 19702 where a service in celebration of Kefa’s life will take place at 11 AM.
