Leonia R. Green

Leonia Green, 91, of Newark, Delaware, formerly of Browntown in Wilmington, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026. Her long life was marked by strength, deep resilience, and a generosity of spirit that touched everyone who knew her. While we mourn her passing, we choose to celebrate her life—a life filled with love, laughter, and meaningful memories. Born on July 20, 1934, in Pleasant Hill, Maryland, to the late John and Marie (Mahler) Lockard, Leonia was part of a large and loving family. She was one of ten children, a childhood that shaped her generous spirit and the strong sense of togetherness she carried throughout her life. On August 25, 1951, she married the love of her life, Ira Green, Sr. Together they raised seven children, building a well grounded family. Her home was a place of love, warmth, steadiness, and open doors—where anyone could find comfort, understanding, and a listening ear. Leonia leaves on a legacy of love carried on by her sons, Henry Lockard and Ira Green, Jr. (Janice), and her daughters, Nellie Young (Charles) and Donna Abbott. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren, each one a testament to the enduring love and strength she poured into her family. She leaves behind her brothers, Louis “Sonny” (Joyce) and John “Jack” (Jean), and her sisters, Frances, Louise, and Ninette (Eugene), as well as a host of extended family and friends who cherished her deeply. She never forgot a birthday; she sent cards every year to all of her family and friends—a small but heartfelt gesture that made everyone feel remembered and loved. Leonia is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ira Green, Sr.; her sons, John Green, Sr. and Ronald Green; her daughter, Eleanor “Winnie” Kramarck; and her siblings, Eleanor, Amor “Bud,” Henrietta “Sis,” and Lucky. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life. Leonia lived a full and joyful life. She loved to travel, make crafts, work on puzzles, cook, shop, and—above all—spend time with her family. These simple joys brought her the greatest happiness and created everlasting memories and bonds her loved ones will hold close forever. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Timothy’s Newark, 100 Creek View Road, Newark, DE 19711. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
