Nathaniel J. Walton

Nathaniel (Nate) J. Walton, age 76, of Bear DE passed away on Friday October 2, 2009. Nate was a kind and gentle soul who greeted the world with a smile. He greatly enjoyed meeting new people and always had a good story to share. Nate was born in Jackson, MI in 1932. He was the oldest child of Dr. Nathaniel Joseph and Catherine (Schneider) Walton and brother of Regina and Margaret (Peg). He was a graduate of Quincy (MI) High School and the University of Michigan with a degree in Economics. Nate played trumpet in the UM marching band and there heard the roar of the ‘Big House’. He also served in the US Army Field Artillery and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. In 1960, Nate married the former Nancy Ann Peters from New York, NY, a model and soprano vocalist. The couple had four sons: Nathaniel Peter (married to Paige Walter), Brian Christopher, Michael Henry (Margaret Peiffer) and Thomas Xavier (Desiree Holmgren). He is survived by his wife, sisters, sons, seven grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. Nate began his professional career as an accountant with Bendix Corp., in the 1950’s. He joined IBM in 1966, where he worked in a variety of capacities, ultimately finishing as a manager in the special projects and human resources divisions. He retired in 1989. Nate was active in the Catholic Church, especially at St. Catherine of Siena in Riverside, CT. He played the trumpet for the church and was a member of the choir, along with his wife, Nancy. He was also a proud member of the Sauerkrauts, a German band whose music could be found at town festivities and events. He was a resident of Ridgewood NJ, Greenwich CT, Greer SC and finally Bear DE. “So I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work all the days of the life God has given him under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:15 Services will be held at 11:15am on Thursday, October 8 2009, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear DE, with interment following at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
