Thomas Houghton

Thomas Houghton of New Castle, DE passed away suddenly on December 21, 2016. He was 55 years old. Thomas was devoted to his family. He loved to hunt and fish with his sons Paul and Ron, his uncle Gene, grandson Brian, and many friends. A self-employed roofer by trade, he loved to tinker with, build, rebuild and fix just about anything, and he enjoyed using his talents to help his family and friends. Thomas was hilarious and had a wicked sense of humor. Whether he knew you or not, he’d most likely have you laughing within seconds. Thomas will be remembered most for his big hearted, generous, humble and truly selfless nature. Thomas just showed up - to babysit, fix your roof, drop your engine, donate to your charity, change your tire, lend an ear, lend a buck, lend a hand…He was the best partner, dad, uncle, brother, Pop Pop and friend anyone could ever ask for. He truly blessed everyone who was lucky enough to have crossed his path and he will be greatly missed. Thomas leaves behind so many who loved and appreciated him tremendously and will miss him with all of their hearts: his devoted partner of 30 years, Arlene Mathena; his children Paul Houghton, Amelia Houghton, Ron Paloni, (Robin), Edward Thayer, Jason Mathena (Carolina), Tommy Mathena ( Jamie) and Jessie Hammerer; his sisters: Patti Burek (Larry), and Theresa Houghton; and his brother, Joseph Houghton (Kathy). Thomas’ grandchildren Alliy, Angel, Vincent, Aliyah, Brian, Cecilia, Gianna, Gage and Esabella and great grandchildren Shane and Agnes will all greatly miss their Pop Pop. Also mourning the huge loss of Thomas from their lives are many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends and neighbors. His niece, Brittany, and her children, Chantene, Tre’chan & Christian held a special place in Thomas’ heart. They will miss their uncle very much. Thomas was also especially close with friends Lenny Needles and Frank Hutchinson, and Denise Walker Roberts and her family. Thomas is predeceased by his parents, Bernard “Reds” Houghton and Mildred “Millie” (Baron) Schank; and his older brother, Paul Houghton. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, December 30 from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702. A service in celebration of Thomas’ life will follow at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
