Vernon "Bud" Meier

Vernon “Bud” Meier, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on April 3, 2012. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Bud was born in Oceanport, NJ and grew up in nearby Long Branch. After serving in the Army Air Corps for three years as a cryptographer in Northern Africa during World War II, he went to Trenton State College and graduated with a teaching degree. He moved to Felton, Delaware, for his first job where he taught shorthand and typing. After about five years, he taught at Newark High School, and then moved to Christiana High School when it opened. He remained a teacher there until 1987 when he retired after 38 years. Bud was married to his beloved wife and constant companion, Vera, for 56 years. They did everything together and were very happy! He was a devout Christian and faithful servant of God. He loved to teach! For many years, he taught Adult Sunday School. Bud also served on the church board. Church was important to him, and he was a big part of his home church, First Assembly of God in Elkton, Maryland, until recently when his health declined. He lived his life for the Lord in all that he did and was an inspiration to many. Bud was an avid gardener and loved to tinker around in the yard. He also loved to feed the birds. He enjoyed many camping trips with his family when the children were younger and had a soft spot in his heart for Sandy Cove where they spent time over many summers. He also spent many wonderful years vacationing at Rehoboth Beach with his family. The family would like to thank Comfort Keepers and Compassionate Care Hospice for the excellent care they provided. Bud will be dearly missed by his wife, Vera Meier; and children: Ron Meier (Robin) from Littleton, Colorado, Dave Meier (Lisa) from Smyrna, Tennessee, Joyce Morgan (Gary) from Rising Sun, Maryland, Joan Thorp (Wade) from Bear, Delaware; and grandchildren: Rachel, Hannah, Joel, Annie, Jeff, Jeremy, Jill, Jordan, Lauren, Todd & Ross. The Celebration Service will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 9th at First Assembly of God, 290 Whitehall Road, Elkton, MD. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11 am.
