Wilfredo Gonzalez Rivera

Wilfredo “Freddie” Gonzalez Rivera, age 67, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026. He was born on April 16, 1958, and throughout his life, he was a man known for his humor, his music, his deep love of family, and his unmistakable pride in his Puerto Rican heritage. Freddie spent his career working in custodial services within long-term care facilities, where he was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and the humor he brought to those around him. He always had a joke ready to brighten someone’s day, and his easygoing spirit left an impression on everyone he met. Freddie had a true passion for life’s simple joys. He enjoyed raising and training pigeons, a hobby that connected him to nature and patience. He loved classic salsa and old-school R&B, and he could often be found singing along with his favorites. Music lived in him, especially when he played the bongos, a pastime that brought him great happiness. He enjoyed gathering his family together, filling the room with laughter, music, and stories. A fan of classic cars and sports cars, Freddie loved working with his hands, rebuilding engines, restoring old beauties, or simply tinkering in the garage. He also enjoyed watching old Western movies, never tiring of the nostalgia and comfort they brought him. Above all, Freddie was a proud Puerto Rican. He wore his heritage boldly and joyfully, and he passed that pride on to the generations who follow him. Freddie will be remembered for his humor, his warmth, his music, and the deep love he carried for his family. His legacy lives on in the stories, smiles, and melodies he leaves behind. Freddy is survived by his former spouse, Myrna Hernandez, and by his beloved children: Vincent Hernandez (Melissa Donovan), Delia Hernandez (Jack Gonzalez), Alayda Hernandez (Nelson Vazquez), William Rivera (Angela Rivera), Luis Rivera; he was a proud and devoted grandfather to: Leanora, Jason, Madisson, Zachary, Sophia, Nelson Jr., Emily, and Lorenzo, all of whom he adored. Freddie is also survived by his siblings: Miriam Rodriguez, Charlie Gonzalez, Rosa Rivera, Carmen Rivera, Gloria Burgos, Nicholas Rivera, Darlene Rodriguez, Vidal Rivera, Rafael Rivera, William Rivera, and Gloria Melendez; as well as many nieces and nephews, whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delia Jones and Nicholas Rivera; brothers, Raul Gonzalez and Miguel Rivera; and his nephew Jose Merced (TJ). Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 10 AM – 12 PM on Friday, February 20, 2026 at Strano and Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702. A service in celebration of Freddie’s life will begin at 12 PM. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Silverbrook Cemetery 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19805.
